Worst seat in the house

12 Mar

What are these for?

The Family History Library has 2.4 million rolls of microfilm, 3 quarters of a million microfiche, a couple hundred thousand books and a bunch of other cool stuff.  Then why is it that the majority of the people here are sitting in front of computers looking at Ancestry.com and other online databases?

I want to *scream* at these people.  What an absolute waste of time and resources.  Every decent public library in the country has Ancestry.com and HeritageQueset Online.  Don’t get me wrong, those are great tools, when you are NOT sitting next to 2 and a half MILLION rolls of 16mm and 35mm microfilms.

On the bright side, there is barely a wait for the microfilm scanners.  Most people are still doing photocopies and printouts.  Pfft.

I hope you (and Sue) are having a good time in SLC. If you need a break to stretch your legs, head up the hill to the Pioneer Museum. We have a family picture hanging there – It’s a group picture of Rollins Don Carlos Shepherd and Lizzie Talmer Roberts and children. I’d like to say it’s on the second floor, at the back nearer to the right hand side than the left…but you could ask someone who works there…

Michael I just found out about your blog when I found out we had missed seeing ya’ll when you came to SLC. I first want to apologize for myself and all the other totally non-techy idiots who have these resources and an almost a complete inability to use them without a nanny standing over us helping us on.
That said I also wanted to say how excited I am to have YOU as a resource now and I have quite a few questions to ask as soon as I unbury my Gen stuff.
Most pertinent is how to go about researching old Parish records from 1750 to 1790 in Eastern Tennessee. The county courthouse (and hence, all the records ) burned down and with it all easy access to one line we have through there.
I will breathlessly be awaiting your reply.

New tag – Morons. No beating around the bush here.

I like your blog. Keep up the great ideas. I wish we could have met you in Salt Lake. I hope you found what you were looking for.

So I also have to ask..did you find any goodies while there? I did once…his name ( drumroll please) was Notley Norris. At once strangely unique and alliterative. He is from SC on Mom’s side.
The picture Deb referred to is situated near the entrance to the doll’s room-whereever that is.

I did get back 2 generations on a line that has been giving me grief for quite some time.
